RPC Tour 2012

Greetings Everyone!

Next term, SPSS would like to go on a tour of the Regional Psychiatric Centre (RPC) right here in Saskatoon! In preparation for organizing the tour, we would like to know how many students are interested in going
on the tour.

Some details to consider:
-we are hoping to go on this tour late January - early February (exact date still to be announced...)
-it is FREE
-we are likely to car pool so we may need a few volunteers to drive...and perhaps if you end up being a passenger, you can donate a few dollars your volunteer driver for gas money? (RPC is on Central Ave, not that far from campus)

-it will be interesting, a good educational experience for psychology
students, and FUN!

Please e-mail us at spss.info@usask.ca if you are interested in going!

Thanks guys!

Term Paper Help

Got something to hand in that's worth a chunk of marks? Come get a few tips.

November 17th
4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Arts 153

This will be a drop-in Q & A type of thing. SPSS executive members will be ready to help you look over weak sections of your paper, proofread, and check over formatting issues. A 6th edition APA manual will also be available at the session, should you need to consult it.

If you want a bit of help ahead of time, the University of Washington Lit Review Guide ain't too shabby. Our Links page has some good resources too.

Pre-Midterm Stats Study Session #2

Hey. We will be having another stats study session:

Tuesday November 1st
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Arts 48

Our executive is actively gathering materials & questions for this session so that the session will have more of a practice midterm style. As always, though, we will be free to answer questions you may have. These sessions are for members of the SPSS, but you are always welcome to join!

Beetlejuice Screening - Oct 31st

That's right. We will be showing BEETLEJUICE for FREE Monday, October 31st (Halloween) at 4:00 p.m. in the Neatby-Timlin Theatre (Room 241 in the Arts Building). Bring your friends, bring a bit of money (there will be an intermission with snacks), and bring that good ol' Halloween spirit. It's sure to be spooktacular!

Lab Report Help

It can be challenging writing your first lab reports (hint, hint, third year cognitive/neuro labs). We've put up some slides that might help you. Check them out in the Lab Report Tips tab, where you can view them as a slide show.

Design Our Logo Contest!

Do you have an eye for style? Are you a creative genius? An amateur artist? We're looking for a design to put on merchandise (shirts, mugs, hats, hoodies, etc.) for this year! Your design should include something about Psychology and U of S - maybe don't include the year - but besides that, it's up to you.

The SPSS executive will be taking designs in .jpeg form until November 15th 2011. You may submit them attached in an email to spss.info@usask.ca

And there's a PRIZE! If we choose your design, you will be entitled to a prize package that will include a piece of merchandise with your logo on it and some other stuff. Good stuff.

Good luck everyone!

Seen Us Around?

Now you can know our ugly faces, because our photos are up in the Executive tab in our blog.

First Stats Study Session

Great news! The SPSS is hosting a group study session for PSY 233 (statistics) next week.

Tuesday September 27th
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

We will hopefully be running these sessions on a weekly/bi-weekly basis. Bring you calculators, notes, assignments, etc.

Grad School Powerpoint Slides Up

For those of you who are considering grad school, the SPSS just put up a new page that contains an entire powerpoint with advice on how to get in! It was prepared by last year's executive and some other people, so thanks to them!

Visit the page here.

Advising Flowcharts

These may be the most useful tools for planning out your undergraduate degree. And just some advice:
- take your stats in 2nd year! If you don't, you will take longer to complete your degree (i.e., > 4 years)
- work backwards from what you know you need to take your last year, especially if you are considering the honours degree
- take classes that allow you flexibility in choosing courses down the road (i.e., choose a variety of 2nd year courses, or choose courses that are prerequisites for multiple 3rd year classes)
- download the undergraduate advising handbook. Read it, know it, love it.
